Spin – A Turnaround Extended
A Turnaround Extended
Since 2023, Jaronas Höhener, Manuel Balzarek and Patrick Kessler have been exploring and expanding the soundscape of traditional "Talerbecken" (coin bowls). As a herdsman's instrument, these clay milk bowls are swung by hand and made to sound by a spinning five-franc coin ("Taler"). Instead of coins, materials like nails, beans, rotate, and the traditional natural yodel is replaced by double bass and trumpet. Differently prepared bowl surfaces gradually modify and deepen the musical spectrum, with almost static sounds layering to form a soundscape. The trumpet and double bass add additional accents. “Spin: A Turnaround Extended” takes its listeners on a journey that, like any musical turnaround, seemingly returns to the beginning — but not quite.
Unlike in traditional performance practice, the Talerbecken in this work rotate mechanically. By spinning up to three prepared clay bowls simultaneously, they expand the classic drone into polyphony — while also layering various rhythms. These analog looping machines are powered by motors specifically developed for the project by Manuel Balzarek from the Kunstgiesserei St.Gallen.
