Exposition (in the year 2024)
The Chuchchepati Orchestra installs itself, for example, in the garden of the Swiss National Sound Archives in Lugano. The four musicians are ready to play. Two gardeners enter the scene and bring a tree and tools. The orchestra begins to play – the tree is planted. Each instrument is amplified by a loudspeaker. The sounds support the gardeners in their hard physical work. Each hornspeaker of the Chuchchepati Orchestra is microphoned and digitally recorded.
Closing Theme
The performative concert is open to the public. The finalapplause of the audience is also recorded.
The gardeners are also recorded during their planting work. The tool sounds and breathing blend with the instrumental sounds. The performance lasts a maximum of 18 minutes. The recordings of the individual instruments and the gardeners planting work are each cut onto 12 inch vinyl records. The recording of the finalapplause of the audience is cut on the B – sides of all records. The 5 vinyl records and an exact playing instruction / score are stored for 100 years at the Swiss National Sound Archives in Lugano.
Development (in the year 2124)
In the meantime, the musicians have died and are replaced by DJs. The loudspeakers are borrowed from the cantonal library AR or from the Chuchchepati Orchestra association. The DJs position themselves around the tree and play the
individual records according to the score. Two new gardeners enter the scene and, inspired by the polyphonic soundtrack, start cutting down the tree.
Cadence
As soon as the tree starts to fall there is a general pause for the DJs. The tree plays a groaning cadence. The wood is to
be used sustainably later according to the score. During the solo of the tree, the DJs flipthe vinyl records to the B sides.
Coda
The DJs play a thunderous coda with the B-side, the audience‘s recording from 2024.
Fine
Lively applause for the DJs and the two gardeners. Recapitulation / Variation: If cutting trees is forbidden 2124 and natural shade is indispensable, the saws can be replaced by shovels and another tree can be planted according to the score.
